Vehicle Requirements
E-Z Way has rental vehicles available to rent in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo for an additional fee. If the applicant is bringing a vehicle, please review the requirements below.
Please note: These requirements are set by the Department of State, not by E-Z Way. Our state-certified examiners cannot start a test with a vehicle that fails inspection.
Required Vehicle Documents
Valid proof of registration. Examiners will check that registration and license plate belong to the vehicle you brought.
License plate tabs must match vehicle registration and be applied to the license plate.
Documents can be shown digitally. Please take screenshots in advance.
Expired documents cannot be accepted per State guidelines. Please double check expiration dates!
Safety Inspection Requirements
We cannot conduct a test if any of the items listed below fail inspection.
Items that most frequently cause a vehicle to fail the safety inspection:
Equipment Checklist
Brakes
Brake lights
Center-mounted brake light (usually above the rear windshield or on top of the trunk)
Doors*
Fuel level
Headlights
Heater/defroster
Horn
Lug nuts (only one can be missing per vehicle)
Muffler
Rearview mirror
Outside left (driver's side) mirror
Safety belts for all occupants
Seats for all occupants
Speedometer
Suspension components
Taillights
Tires (properly inflated; not damaged)
Turn signals (front and rear)
Windshield**
Windshield wipers and washers
* The driver and passenger doors must work from the inside and outside. Doors that cannot be opened are safety hazards.
** Examiners may refuse to administer a test if the vehicle's windshield is cracked in a way that obstructs the driver's view.
Vehicles from Rental Companies or Dealerships
Due to differences in insurance coverage, there are few instances where an applicant can test in a vehicle supplied by another company.
If the applicant plans to use a rental car from an external company (e.g., Hertz, Enterprise) or a car dealership, please call us directly during office hours for further guidance, including documentation requirements.
Interlock Restrictions
If the applicant has an Ignition Interlock Device restriction, the supplied vehicle must have the device installed for the test to be conducted. This is a state requirement.
E-Z Way’s rental vehicles do not have interlock devices. We recommend waiting to schedule the test appointment until after the interlock device is installed.
Review the Driving Skills Test Study Guide
This document includes information about the test, including what exercises/skills are on the test and how it is scored. We strongly recommend reviewing the entire document before scheduling to ensure applicants have time to practice any skills they will be tested on, including the Basic Control Skills (“parking”) portion of the test.
